ABOUT WAVES SCHOOL

Waves school of surfing is a school where I can share all my years of experience and knowledge with the youth of today. It is this experience and knowledge that will give them the confidence to take on any challenge that they may face in the future. It’s a school where any surfer of any ability or level can come and learn more about himself and improve his or her surfing.

Waves surf school also wants to share the beauty of the Garden Route with all it’s amazing attractions and activities. Along side surfing, Mossel Bay and the surounding area is ideal for a relaxing, fun filled, adventure, surfing experience.

It is a school of learning, motivation and encouragement, a place where young and old can build their self esteem and find their strengths in a secure and controlled environment.

Waves School of Surfing is where you can learn what can be achieved through hard work and dedication. One can also learn that anything in life can be achieved by being passionate and focused. Through surfing you will also learn valuable life lessons, morals and be given direction and drive through self motivation.

Waves School of Surfing is also about coaching and assisting talented young surfers to fulfill their potential and their dreams.

ABOUT LLEWELLYN WHITAKKER

As competitive surfer Llewellyn started surfing at age 10 and, after school (and a successful junior career) relocated to the warm waters of Durban. When not honing his craft in the sand-bottom waves between the Piers (or missioning up and down the coast) he studied to become a paramedic.

It was in Durban where Llewellyn developed his drive to take the next step as competitive surfer. So, after three years of studying medics and working on ambulances and in hospitals, he set off to the UK where he would base himself to tackle the WQS.

This did not come easy, however as he had work many odd jobs all over the world to achieve his dream. And, herein lies the most important lesson Llewellyn aims to pass on to all young, aspiring surfers: ‘It will take hard work and dedication to achieve your dreams; and, the only way to do that is to focus, trust and believe’.

Brief contest history

  • WQS 2002 – 2007 top 100
  • 2003 Quiksilver Good Wave Champion
  • UK triple crown champion 2007
  • SA champ 2009 and 2013
  • SA Team Captain 2011
  • 2 x Vic Bay Quad champion 2014 & 2015

AS COACH

As his elite international surfing career started to wind down, he got involved with coaching. After having done his level 3 BSA (British Surfing Association) course he coached the British junior team in 2006 and 2007.

By now he’d had enough of mud island and he decided to move back to sunny South Africa to settle in his old haunt of Mossel Bay.

In 2008 he started Waves School of Surfing, which signalled the dawn on a new era in South African surf coaching. Llewellyn went onto to do his ISA level 2 coaching course and is currently busy with his sport psychology qualification.

‘Coach Lu’ (as he is affectionately known) is now something of a stalwart in the surfing community, and, as one of the top coaches in SA and is continuously striving to improve the depth of junior surfing in SA.
